Abstract

Introduction: myocarditis and endocarditis are cardiovascular diseases resulting from inflammatory and infectious processes that affect the layers of the heart, representing one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Objectives: in this context, the objective of the study was to analyze prevalence estimates and deaths due to myocarditis and endocarditis in the northeast region of Brazil from 2016 to 2019. Methods and materials: this is a descriptive, cross-sectional epidemiological study with a quantitative approach. The study sample consisted of data on prevalence and deaths due to endocarditis and myocarditis according to sex and age group, recorded in the states of the Northeast region of Brazil, using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. Results: the prevalence of myocarditis was higher than the registered cases of endocarditis. However, endocarditis was responsible for more deaths in all states of the Northeast region (2298). Regarding sex, males were the most affected, with the highest number of cases (50.92 and 55.04%) and deaths (53.52 and 53.71%) than females for endocarditis and myocarditis, respectively. Conclusion: it was possible to present an epidemiological overview of cases and deaths caused by endocarditis and myocarditis in the northeast region of Brazil, highlighting the importance of strategies that focus on the importance of early identification and diagnosis of cases, in addition to actions aimed at preventing infection by the main etiological agents in question.
