Factors related to sexual dysfunction in the puerperia: an integrative review
Keywords:
sexuality, Postpartum Period, Risk Factors, Sexual HealthAbstract
Introduction: The variety of changes experienced by women in the puerperal pregnancy cycle in physiological, sociocultural, psychological and identity aspects can affect their general well-being, relationship and sexuality with possible occurrence of female sexual dysfunction. Objective: To summarize the prevalence and factors related to sexual dysfunction in the puerperium. Method: This is an integrative review carried out in eight electronic databases of articles developed on this topic, published in English, Portuguese or Spanish, from 2011 to 2020. Results: After reading and analyzing the articles, 16 articles made up the sample final and were analyzed through thematic categories. Six main categories of factors were identified: related to maternal education, sexual problems during pregnancy, perineal injury, type of delivery, time of puerperium and maternal parity. Conclusion: Changes in sexual function in the puerperium are linked to biopsychosocial changes inherent to the postpartum period. Cesarean section should not be indicated to preserve sexual function, as it is restored to pre-gestational parameters 12 to 24 months after delivery. Sexual function should be part of the puerperal care routine.
