Challenges of the oral health team in pregnancy assistance: integrative review

Abstract

Introduction: It is essential to understand the difficulties faced by the dental team to provide comprehensive care to pregnant women, considering the primary health care context. Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the challenges of the oral health team in providing oral health care to pregnant women in primary care in Brazil. Materials and Methods: This is an integrative literature review, of exploratory origin and is justified in identifying the challenges of the dental team in the care of pregnant women in primary care. The search strategy included a search for articles indexed in electronic databases: Virtual Health Library (BVS); Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO); portal States National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health (PubMed); Portal Capes and the search system Google Scholar, referring to publications in the last five years, with the descriptors in health sciences (DeCS), from the Regional Library of Medicine (Bireme). Inclusion criteria were: available full articles published, studies about the reality of Brazil, in Portuguese and English. Studies of another nature, such as theses and dissertations, were excluded. Results: After the searches, with the inclusion criteria, a total of 2 articles were identified. It was possible to observe that there are flaws in the formation and performance of oral health professionals in prenatal care in primary care. Conclusion: Thus, it is necessary to rethink practices, attitudes and skills, as well as myths and beliefs without scientific basis.
