Introduction: The Kangaroo Mother Care promotes a shorter length of stay for newborns in the neonatal unit, reduces hypothermia in low birth weight newborns, facilitates the promotion of breastfeeding, bonding and family security. Objective: To know the difficulties experienced by parents of preterm newborns regarding the Kangaroo Mother Care. Materials and methods: qualitative research, in the Case Study modality, whose data were obtained between March and December 2016, through interviews with 12 mothers and three fathers of preterm newborns, participants of all stages of the Kangaroo Method, the which were submitted to the technique of thematic content analysis. Results: The interpretation of the data was presented in three thematic categories in which it is perceived that the parents feel helpless due to the fragmented care and the unpreparedness of the health professionals to understand the complexity of the relationships that involve the care of the preterm and the family in the Kangaroo Method on an individual and collective basis. Conclusion: This study showed that there is a gap between the KM as a policy and what is actually developed by the health team, in the context of a state reference hospital.
