Abstract

While the scientific literature on women's reproductive health has risen in the academic world, the literature involving the specificities of indigenous women with a focus on their cultural context is still scarce. In general, the studies are geographically and ethnographically quite circumscribed. In this perspective, the present study aimed to understand beliefs, traditions and practices about reproductive health, especially on sexual initiation, pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium in the indigenous communities of Brazilian indigenous, based on to scientific work published between 1989 and 2016. It is a bibliographical study, of integrative review of literature using BIREME, SCIELO, LILACS and Google Academic databases. The descriptors used were:"Health of Indigenous Populations", "Pregnancy", "Childbirth", "Postpartum period", "Tradition", “Indigenous Special Sanitary District (“DSEIâ€) e "Indigenous sexuality". The inclusion criteria were: to deal with the theme, to be scientific work published or presented in scientific event, during the years 1989 and 2016, to use a descriptive approach, and be available, in full text and online, without language restriction. Materials that did not meet the inclusion criteria e/or books were excluded. The results show that, although there are similarities between indigenous beliefs and traditional practices, there are also several singularities in each ethnicity that need to be taken into account by health professionals and public policies. It is hoped that work of this nature will be added to others that will inspire the construction of public health policies for indigenous women that are efficient and do not violate the cultural identity of this ethnic group.
