Cases of violence against indigenous women in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil

Introduction: Violence against indigenous women is a recurring event, not only in physical or sexual form. Objective: The objective of the study was to describe the cases of violence against indigenous women in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil from 2009 to 2017. Method: epidemiological, descriptive, retrospective survey. Data were collected from the Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (SINAN), for the period from 2009 to 2017.Results: In the period in which the analysis was carried out, 1,862 cases of violence against indigenous women in MS were observed, of these 650 were repetitive violence, of which 21.48% occurred in the 20-29 age group, 18.58% in the 30-39 age group, 16.27% in the 10-14 age group and 13.10% in the 15-19 age group. A significant difference (p <0.05) was observed between the number of cases reported in the 20-29 age group. It was possible to verify that the cases of violence underwent evolution in the period from 2009 to 2017. The municipalities that stand out for having a higher number of cases are Dourados with 544 (29.21%) cases, Caarapó with 277 (14.87%), Amambai with 219 (11.76%), Campo Grande with 163 (8.75%) and Japorã with 101 (5.42%), the other municipalities presented the sum of 558 (29.96%) cases. Conclusion: Violence against indigenous women is linked to several factors, requiring greater participation of health professionals in the life of this population.
