Abstract

Introduction: Safety in medication processes has been one of worldwide focus in response to the global challenge titled Medication Without Harm. Objective: to know how the medication management process occurs from the perspective of nurses. Method: Descriptive, qualitative research, conducted in a hospital in southern Brazil that has 107 beds (74%) for the exclusive care of the Unified Health System, with 16 nurses responsible for direct patient care. Data collection was performed in June and July 2018, using a semi-structured and self-applied form, and subsequently subjected to thematic analysis. Results: There was a lack of consensus regarding the medication process, and its analysis alerts to the fact that only one nurse recognizes himself as an indispensable tool to answer the team's doubts, thus reducing the possibility of error in the process. Conclusion: The management of the medication process is performed without support in institutional guidance and based on own scientific knowledge. The nurses used the medication management process related to the need and particularity of each patient, as an instrument of care management.
