Introduction: Infant deaths represent a serious public health problem, as they are early deaths and, for the most part, preventable. Objective:this study aimed to evaluate the death and survival of preterm infants hospitalized in Neonatal Intensive Care Units in the interior of Bahia. Materials and methods: this is a non-concurrent cohort study, including preterm infants hospitalized between January 2016 and December 2017. The dependent variable was neonatal death. Bivariate analyzes were performed using the Log Rank test. In order to analyze the time to death, the non-parametric Kaplan-Meier method and their respective survival curves were used. Statistical significance was considered when p value ≤ 0.05. Results: a sample of 400 preterm infants was obtained. Evolved with higher mortality in the neonatal period: female preterm infants (14.5%), extreme preterm infants (56.5%), extremely low birth weight (57.7%), small for gestational age (16.8%), with 5th minute Apgar less than 7 (29.6%), undergoing advanced resuscitation in the delivery room (51.8%), with moderate hypothermia at admission (23.4%), with some morbidity (15.8%) and submitted to some surgery (22.2%). The variables with statistical significance in the bivariate analysis were: gestational age, birth weight, Apgar 5th minute, neonatal resuscitation, morbidity and temperature at admission. For these variables, Kaplan Meier survival curves were constructed. Conclusion: there was a predominance of deaths in the early neonatal period, influence of survival with the biological characteristics of preterm infants, neonatal care and associated conditions. Improvement in prenatal care and peripartum assistance is needed.
